David Cowan was born and raised in British Columbia, Canada . Returning to college as an adult, he earned his BA with a Psychology Major with the Open Learning Institute in 1997. David worked in Child and Family Counseling and Employment Counseling while maintaining an interest in the role of health, diet and nutrition as these issues related to healthy psychological functioning. While pursuing his certification in the Applied Science of Nutrition (Edison Institute of Nutrition, Toronto , Canada ), he became aware of energetic medicine by way of introduction to the Eclosion device. This encounter of ten years ago led to the discovery of quantum biofeedback and the ground-breaking technology of the EPFX/SCIO (also known as QXCI). David left counseling and developed an extensive private practice in BC, working in tandem with Elizabeth Padzierski, Doctor of Chinese Medicine.
He has been engaged for the last three years as one of three master trainers worldwide in Quantum Biofeedback. He trains practitioners regularly at The Quantum Center of Excellence in Los Angeles , California , and has trained practitioners in Budapest , Victoria , BC, Toronto , Cancun, and many major centers in the USA . He writes articles on Nutrition and Quantum Biofeedback for the 'Xrroid Xpress', a practitioner - focused international magazine, and has spoken on the radio (KXLA - the 'Dr. Gene' show), as well as produced a variety of training DVD's and training modules in the field. David is identified with the Neurofeedback and Biofeedback Certification Board ( www.nbcb.or g) as a biofeedback Instructor, administering the training and qualifying examination for Certified Biofeedback Therapists in the USA and Canada .

Change is the inevitable constant. There is a 'hidden' force in nature that will not allow any one of us to sit still. Individually and collectively, it is becoming very clear that our past paradigms, once liberating, have become our prisons. This is no more evident than in the field of medicine, particularly modern, western 'science-based' Reductionist medicine. 'Iatrogenic disease', first described by Ivan Illich ('On the Limits of Medicine', Penguin, 1977), has now been identified as one of the major killers in modern society (see www.mercola.com and JAMA, 04/98).
What has been missing in the development of science-based medicine is inclusion of the subtler, energetic aspects of biology. These subtle realms are no mystery to the world's traditional healing systems, or modern physicists, for that matter. Chinese and Ayurvedic Medicine, both operating under 6,000 years of accumulated knowledge, insight and wisdom clearly acknowledge and work in tandem with these energies.
Independent researchers in the West have been 'stumbling' on these findings independently, yet have received little support or funding for further research. Some have been vilified or marginalized due to their non-compliance with 'drug and surgery' based approaches.
David will show how the energetic matrix underlying all matter is operating intelligently in living systems. The first premise is the existence of the ‘human energy body', or biological field. This field has been shown to produce measurable electrical parameters (Hunt 1986, Brennan 1987). Using standard EMG equipment, Valerie Hunt, while teaching at UCLA, measured electrical energy on body far beyond the normal range for the muscle-produced signals. Further investigation on her part led to the conclusion that theoretical energy vortexes, or ‘chakras' noted in eastern metaphysical traditions, can be measured electrically.
Harold S. Burr, working at Yale University in the 1940's, used a super sensitive photographic technique capable of revealing subtle electrical energy fields around living seeds, leaves and lizards. He discovered that the energy field around an immature subject was roughly in the form of an adult of that species, either plant or animal. From this work, he hypothesized that the electrical energy field was acting as a ‘guiding developmental template' for the life form.
So-called ‘energy techniques,' including traditional spiritual and ritualistic healing techniques, claim to be interceding on the level of this organizational field. It is assumed in these approaches that aberrations in the physical form are necessarily accompanied by incoherency in the accompanying energy field. By work exclusively on the level of the field alone, it is possible to ‘reorder' the underlying intelligence of the organism to reestablish homeostasis on all levels (Brennan 1987, Gerber 1988).
Beyond development and healing stimulation, one of the primary expressions of this intelligence is in the Electro-Physiological Reactivity, or 'EPR' phenomenon. This is where living systems, from the most basic single-cell organisms to the most complex, react with a measurable electrical response to their immediate environment. This reactivity is part of our 'survival software,' which is operating continually, but primarily below conscious awareness. When these reactions occasionally break through to conscious awareness, we call it 'intuition' or 'instinct'.
Newer research into the Nature of DNA and certain protein structures in the body are providing a means to appreciate energetic field interactions and interventions (Horowitz: 2005, Oschman: 2000). DNA has been discovered to exhibit ‘liquid crystal' characteristics, involving the emission and reception of light energies in the UV range. This is also relevant to the understanding of the Acupuncture Meridian system as a ‘light transmission system' throughout the body. The light emitted by the DNA displays the attributes of weak lasers. Lasers are now known to be the most efficient informational carriers on the planet.It is the reactive intelligence of the human energy field that is the prime ‘intelligence' behind Electro Dermal Screening, Electro Acupuncture, and the EPFX/SCIO device.
By challenging the human energy field with sample substances, it is possible to identify specific stressors or needs. David will trace the development of rudimentary technologies from over 50 years ago utilized in pre-diagnostic screening and medication testing.
So far, we have described the testing capabilities of energetic medicine devices. ‘Read-only' systems can be invaluable in detecting deep levels of stress, not only physical, but also mental, emotional, nutritional and metabolic stressors. As the speed of reactivity lies at around the speed of ionic exchange (1/100 second), and thanks to the computational speed of modern computers, the EPFX/SCIO systems are currently testing over 9,000 reactions in a 3-minute test. As neither the patient nor operator is aware of which item is being tested (and logically could not, given the speed of testing), we have a truly comprehensive double-blind test. Practitioners are trained in the art of test interpretation, looking for patterns and trends in the individual reactive profile. Once general patterns of stress have been verified, a practitioner can readily observe which remedies, nutrients or therapies produce the most beneficial response. Therapists can thereby address the biological, psychological and etiological uniqueness of the individual in designing a therapeutic protocol. This is in contract to the cookie-cutter, trial-and-error approach so often foisted on patients by a pharmaceutically-oriented Medical System.
